Part 2:
Ah Ling, a MPhil student in Philosophy at the Chinese University of Hong Kong was sentenced to 16 weeks in jail for "illegal assembly" on the evening of the 1-million-peopled June 9 rally in 2019.
Before going to jail, he said:
“When are we going to achieve it? Nobody knows.”
“When are we going to succeed? Nobody knows.”
“Are we going to succeed? Nobody knows it either.”
“But we still have to do it.” Ah Ling uttered this line most sternly.
He made an analogy comparing individuals involved in the pro-democracy movement to the gearwheels of an engine. “A gearwheel doesn’t need a hope to wind, but power. As long as we are gearing towards a desired direction, and when you accept the fact that you might not be able to witness a fruitful result, you will be contented to keep on winding forward. This is not a matter of being optimistic or not.”
Talking about an ideal Hong Kong, Ah Ling suggested a way of reverse thinking on “which core values we have to defend.”
He wanted to say that if citizens in all walks of life in Hong Kong are striving towards the same objective and sharing the same set of values, they will open up many possibilities for the city in the future. Ah Ling stressed that, the critical aspect lies in people’s mentality.
The 2019 anti-ELAB movement has evolved on unprecedented scale. “This is because the movement has drawn together people with different backgrounds and beliefs to work towards a simple and shared value - the fight for Hongkonger’s freedom,” Ah Ling concluded.

The US Bans Cotton Imports from Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps for Involvements of Uyghur Forced Labour
The US put pressure on China for its human rights issues in Xinjiang again on Wednesday (Dec 3) local time. The US was to ban the import of cotton products from the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps (XPCC) and has accused the corps for subjecting imprisoned Uyghurs to forced labour.
The US Customs and Border Protection announced the new arrangements for the withhold release order to ban cotton and cotton products from XPCC. Reuters reported that the Trump administration was seeking to consolidate its harsh stance against China in the final few weeks of Trump’s presidential term, to make it harder for President-elect Biden to resolve the tense relationship between the two nations.
The withhold release order allows the authority to confiscate products allegedly produced by forced labour, in order to tackle human rights abuses. The US considered a total ban on cotton and tomato products imported from Xinjiang, but the ban was opposed by US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue, and the Secretary of the Treasury Steven Mnuchin, and was hence changed to a ban on imports from designated enterprises.

Brazil to Look into Banning Companies that Use 5G Equipment from Huawei
In support of the US’s Clean Network Program, Brazil was looking into legal procedures to restrict national telecommunication companies from using 5G network equipment developed by Huawei. Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro’s national security advisor was looking into whether or not the government should ban Huawei with a presidential decree. However, as many major telecommunication companies have partnered with Huawei for years, the move was expected to be met with strong opposition.
A report stated that the Secretary of Institutional Security Augusto Heleno was in discussions with the Ministry of Communications to set up security provisions that telecommunication companies and equipment suppliers must comply to. They were also studying into the feasibility of a presidential decree. The US has criticised Huawei for its ties with China’s People’s Liberation Army and has expressed concerns over the leaking of confidential information to the Chinese government, which presents threats to national security.
As China has been Brazil’s most important trade partner, the ban on Huawei was expected to be met with strong oppositions from the industry and even from within the government, including the Brazilian Vice President Hamilton Mourao. The Brazilian Minister for Communications Fabio Faria refused to comment on the report, while Heleno has said that he was not involved in affairs pertaining to 5G.

China pushes “vaccine diplomacy” in Southeast Asia
China is using supplies of its Sinovac Biotech’s vaccine to boost its influence in Southeast Asia, which was the main focus of Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s tour in mid of January 2021.
“China wants to show that they are behind ASEAN countries as the vaccination stage of the pandemic approaches,” Aaron Jed Rabena, a research fellow at Manila-based think tank Asia Pacific Pathways to Progress.
Indonesia has a deal to receive about 230 million does of vaccine with Sinovac, Nocacax and WHO’s COVAX facility and government has received 3 million ready-to-use dose of Sinovac.
In Myanmar, Wang promised 300,00 dose of the Sinoca shots. The Chinese vaccine has also drawn attention in countries which Wang has not visited in this tour.
